500 Million Friends
If you prefer a cerebral approach to films, Aaron Sorkin's script is a genius adaptation of the book Accidental Billionaires, and his work with Jesse Eisenberg really cemented the young actor's depiction of emotionally enigmatic Zuckerberg (screen version). Fincher shoots it like an action sequence, cutting scenes back and forth to the beat of an ominously disconcerting soundtrack.
But a feeling I couldn't shake after viewing this, was inspiration. I stayed awake at night wondering what the next big innovation was going to be, it even spawned some new ideas of my own that I can't wait to start working on.
As socially retarded and even borderline sociopathic Zuckerberg (screen version) was, I was impressed by his dedication to the pursuit of his goal. One thing the real Zuckerberg did point out when pressed for differences between movie and real life, was the error in thematics. In Sorkin's version, intellectually narcissistic Mark was guided by social jealousy and ex-girlfriend woes. Says Zuckerberg (real one), "They can't seem to wrap their heads around the fact that maybe people want to build things...because they love to build things."
Even Eduardo Saverin, co-creator of Facebook but since ousted (whose perspective Accidental Billionaires was solely based upon), wrote a piece touching on a similar reflection as mine.
"What struck me most was not what happened – and what did not – and who said what to whom and why. The true takeaway for me was that entrepreneurship and creativity, however complicated, difficult or tortured to execute, are perhaps the most important drivers of business today and the growth of our economy."
If you need further convincing, read my favorite critic James Berardinelli's review of the movie. There's even Oscar buzz.
So go, and watch this movie.
